In Vitro Fertilization
Millions of couples deal with infertility problems each year. Fortunately, there are a number of different options for people with fertility issues. In vitro fertilization is one technique widely used to help women conceive children. This procedure offers couples a safe and highly effective way to overcome fertility problems and achieve pregnancy.
In Vitro Fertilization Basics
The in vitro fertilization process works by taking an ovum and fertilizing it in laboratory. In most cases, a number of these fertilized ova are then transferred to the uterus. The goal is to get an ovum to implant on the uterine wall, resulting in a successful pregnancy.
In Vitro Success Rates
According to the statistics on in vitro procedures, 37 percent of these procedures result in a successful pregnancy among women age 36 and under. It is important to note that factors such as maternal age and sperm quality can also play a major role in the results of the in vitro fertilization procedure. Among women age 38 to 39, there is a 28 percent success rate. The number of successful pregnancy’s drops significantly among women age 40 and over, with an average of 13 percent of the women in this age group becoming pregnant as a result of in vitro fertilization.
In Vitro Fertilization Requirements
Before a woman can undergo the in vitro fertilization procedure, she must meet a number of different requirements. According to experts, the best candidates for this fertility treatment are couples under the age of 35 who have been attempting to conceive naturally for a year or more. Couples opt for in vitro fertilization for many reasons. Endometriosis, problems with the fallopian tubes, male infertility, female infertility, and poor sperm motility are just a few of the factors that may make it difficult for a couple to conceive naturally.
The in vitro fertilization procedure can be expensive, costing nearly $13,000 per cycle. Since multiple fertilized ova are implanted in the uterus, there is also a higher occurrence of multiple births. However, the procedure has been shown to be an effective way for couples facing infertility problems to conceive a child. |
